My first strong female character in a children's book
"When Mary Lennox was sent Misselthwaite Manor to all live with her uncle, she said the most disgusting looking child ever seen." When I read those words as a child, I was petrified. The Secret Garden was the book of my favorite sons. It remains one of the few books that children love to read again every few years. Mary Lennox is a strong fascinating, brave female figure and a girl resource if ever there was one.
It is important for girls and boys, reading books with strong female characters.
Why is it important?
For too long, too many books for children or not, the main characters, the females or included female characters who were passive and not think or act for themselves and have had to play a limited role in society. The world has changed, and the role of women, and it is important to share the books that not only this change, but show more future opportunities for all. Since the books help girls and boys define their places in the world, we have with them children's books, the boys and girls to a variety of ways to see their lives and make the lives of others, rather than to share limited options on grounds of sex.
